Environment
Emissions
Perttula Power Station's cogeneration design supplies both electricity and process steam, reducing the fuel required for our operations. Scope 1 emissions declined 10 percent from 2022 to 2025.
Residue Management
Rare-earth separation produces residues containing naturally occurring radioactive material. Since 2014 these residues have been placed in the former sulphur workings beneath the south shore of Company property, at the South Shore Residue Management Area (former Portilla Beach tract; public access restricted since 2014). The site is fenced and monitored by 38 groundwater monitoring wells, with results reported to state regulators.
Water
In 2021 the Company entered into an agreed order with the state environmental agency regarding the Perttula public water system, which is operated by Perttula Community Services LLC. All corrective actions were completed and the order was fully resolved in 2022.
Coastal Resilience
The Carla Levee, completed in 1963 and raised in 2008, protects Perttula Works and the Separation Facility against storm surge.
